Bryce Canyon is an incredible park, filled with towering red-gold hoodoos -- weathered pinnacles of stone, which look sort of like if the earth grew fingers and decided to wave them at the sky. They’re positively stunning, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, and this canyon is heralded “the largest collection of hoodoos in the world!”
I’ve often felt that stepping into Bryce Canyon is like stepping into another world, and although you’re bound to see incredible things wherever you go in this park, here are my three favorite hikes that always show me the very best this park has to offer: Rim Trail | Easy | 0-11 miles
Walking along the rim of Bryce Canyon is an excellent way to take in the beauty of this amazing place without actually hiking down into the steep canyon. For photographers, Sunrise and Sunset Points are great photo ops at any time of day, but at their best at certain times (I’m sure you can guess when).
Fairyland Loop | Strenuous | 8 miles
This long trail actually travels along part of Rim Trail, including Sunset Point, and is a great way to get up close and personal with the hoodoos. Did any faeries join me on this hike? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s magical all the same.
The Figure 8 Loop | Easy to Strenuous | 6.3 miles
This loop, while not listed as a specific hiking trail on any park maps, is done by combining the Navajo Loop (Moderate), Peek-a-Boo (Strenuous) and Queen’s Garden (Easy) trails for a long but stunning trip. I took this hike on my very first trip to Bryce Canyon, and it was one of the most gorgeous hikes I’ve ever been on. For a great explanation of how to take on this hike, I would recommend checking out Climb-Utah.com's page.
Like most trails in the park, there’s very little shade on this route, so it’s super important that you bring plenty of water. I didn’t the first time I hiked it, and nearly passed out at one point… not something I would recommend! If you speak to the rangers beforehand (instead of being a know-it-all nine year old and thinking yeah, two water bottles, I got this), they’ll likely recommend bringing 1 liter of water “for every 2-3 hours of hiking per person,” which will make you plenty prepared for this gorgeous hike. BONUS: Mossy Cave Trail | Easy | .8 miles
Despite having visited Bryce Canyon three times in the past decade, I’ve never visited Mossy Cave! I spent most of my time at Bryce down south with my favorite hikes and lookouts. Mossy Cave is a little farther apart from most of the other trails, at the northern end of the park, and became a bucket list item from the instant I heard the word cave. Icy in winter, and with a seasonal waterfall, Mossy Cave is a trail I can’t wait to travel, so I thought I would suggest it to you, too!
And there you have it! My personal top picks for trails at Bryce Canyon. Have you ever been here? What were your experiences? Do you think anything should have been added to this list? Please help each other make the most of any future trips to Bryce by sharing all about your experiences there in the comments section down below!
P.S. - Thanks to the National Park Service for the information about the length and classification of each hike!
