Sydney is one of my favorite cities in Australia, and I cannot recommend visiting here enough. If you're planning a trip to this wonderful port town and wondering where you should go to make the most of your time there, look no further. I've got you covered.
Coffee Cruise
One of the highlights of my visit to Sydney was the cruise through Sydney Harbour, where we got to see famous landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from a new perspective. I felt nearly removed from the bustle of the city as the sunlight sparkled on the water and the beaches, buildings and cliffs slowly rolled by. It was such a relaxing experience, one which I’d recommend for anyone who wants to see some of Sydney’s more famous landmarks without pushing through crowds of people.
Bridge Climb
As much as I enjoy moments of relaxation, I’m often a bit more interested in activities that get my adrenaline pumping. If you can relate, then your best bet is to take on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. BridgeClimb Sydney is the only way to go for this experience, and offers tours at every time of day. It’s the priciest option on this list, with current prices reaching $388 per climb, but it’s a fantastic experience, and the views of the city are unlike any other.
Take a Tour
There are plenty of walking tours around, and many of them are free, or ask only for a small fee on a sliding scale. One of my favorite groups is I’m Free Walking Tours, which allows you to pay however much you think the tour was worth at the end of your journey. Their tour of The Rocks was absolutely stellar, and highlighted so much history that we would have otherwise completely missed.
Taronga Zoo
Over one hundred years old, Taronga Zoo is a nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation. When I visited, I decided to splurge on the Wild Australia Experience tour, where I met all sorts of animals, including some elusive nocturnal animals, and learned about what it takes to care for these amazing creatures.
I even got the opportunity to see a quokka, one of my favorite Australian animals--we had a little difficulty finding them at first, and were about to give up when we heard a kookaburra calling! We walked over to find the source of all the noise, and found a bushy kookaburra sitting right on the railing of the quokka enclosure! I can’t promise you any Disney princess-esque animal helpers will come to your aid if you visit, but I can certainly assure you that quokkas are just as cute in real life as they are in pictures! Experience all the great things a big city has to offer!
From museums to incredible restaurants, from pop-up markets to incredible architecture (*cough* Sydney Opera House, anyone?), there’s so many things to do in Sydney. Make friends with some locals and ask what their favorite places to visit are; ask the front desk where you’re staying what events are happening in town; go with the flow and most importantly, be open to new experiences. You never know what will happen if you just step a little bit outside of your comfort zone.
