This past March, I spent two days in Joshua Tree experiencing the spring super bloom, the brief time of year when California's wildflowers bloom all at once, turning the landscape into a dreamy rainbow of colors.
I wanted to show the super bloom in all its glory, but there's only so much that words can illustrate. They say a picture's worth a thousand words--so a video should be worth about a thousand pictures, right?
One of the ways I hoped to expand my blogging horizons, so to speak, was through video, and Joshua Tree seemed like the perfect place to start. My hope is that this gives you a better opportunity to truly experience the stunning beauty of Joshua Tree's super bloom. Check it out below! What Makes a Super Bloom?
Super Blooms don't happen every year, but when they do, they're something truly spectacular. They can only occur when California receives plenty of rain throughout the winter months -- a pretty rare occurrence for our desert regions.
According to LA Mag, besides the super blooms in 2019 and 2017, there hadn't been one since 2008. Of course, just because there's not a super bloom doesn't mean California is flower-free: while the desert may not be as spectacular as it is in some years, areas rich in vegetation, particularly along the coasts, always have something to show off.
If you're heading to Joshua Tree, even during a normal, non-Super Bloom year, one of the most helpful resources I found was this site, Desert USA. It allows people to post where the best blooms can be found, and even has a Wildflower Status bar to show how active the blooms are at any time of year.
Even the cholla cactus and Joshua Trees themselves were in bloom!
Joshua Tree was beautiful during the spring 2019 super bloom, with thousands gorgeous flowers blooming right by the side of the road. I saw dozens of people pulling off to the side just to take pictures of these beauties (myself included).
Seeing the superbloom firsthand was such a unique, wonderful opportunity, and I'm so happy to be able to share at least a taste of it with you!
