The ocean moves me back and forth as I sit on the open water. The salty scent of brine fills my lungs, and mist falls over my cheeks. I had forgotten how much I miss this.
I spent two days in La Jolla in late December, touring old San Diego, kayaking the open water, and eating everything the beachside town had to offer.

California is incredibly diverse; I live near the center of the state, and within an hour or so of driving I can make my way to deserts, forests, caves, mountains, lakes, the ocean, or most any other scenery I could want to visit.
There are so many more parks I would like to include that didn't make the cut--either because I haven't visited them yet, or simply because I felt they wouldn't have fit as well on this list as some of the others. That being said, these are a few of my favorite parks in California, places which take my breath away whenever I see them. I love this state, and I hope that by experiencing even one of these parks, you will understand my love, and start falling for this incredible place, too.

Fern Canyon is one of my favorite places in the world. Located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, a mere thirty minutes north of Redwood National Park, this small, fern-covered canyon is an essential stop for anyone looking to tour the beautiful scenery in Northern California.
In honor of Redwood National Park’s 50th anniversary, I thought it would be an excellent time to share with you some of my personal favorite places to see nearby the park.
I’ve visited this park every few years since I was a child--I even lived close by for two years--and after all this time, I still haven’t lost the sense of awe and wonder that comes over me when I see these magnificent Redwood giants. But incredibly, there's still more to see outside of the collection of parks that make up the massive Redwood park system. If you're thinking about heading to NorCal to celebrate the park's anniversary, then there are some must-see stops you should visit along the way.

There are a few parks that my family and I circulate back to every few years: Redwoods National Park; Grand Canyon and other nearby parks, such as Bryce Canyon and Zion; and this one. With more than a dozen caves and tunnels to explore, you can step into a world unlike any other you can find aboveground.
