The ocean moves me back and forth as I sit on the open water. The salty scent of brine fills my lungs, and mist falls over my cheeks. I had forgotten how much I miss this.
I spent two days in La Jolla in late December, touring old San Diego, kayaking the open water, and eating everything the beachside town had to offer.
In the morning, I woke early to learn to sit on the water again, paddling out into the ocean to see sea caves and marvel at the depths of the water underneath me as I ran my hand over kelp forests. I drank chai and ate crepes so good I had to recreate them at home, and came back to the same shop later for vegan ice cream.
In the afternoon, I went to Old Town for the shops and the music, where I met a woman made of succulents and a man who traveled to Nepal every year to support local women and children through his shop. I ate enchiladas in my hotel room because there was no room to sit in the tiny corner shop with the glittering art and neon pink walls, but I still lingered as long as I could just to smile at the decor.
After a breakfast of more chai and one of the better omelettes I’ve had in a long time, I headed back to the coast. The tide pools were crowded, but I walked along sandy beaches and what looked like fjords in miniature, climbing cliffs and skipping back onto sidewalk only when necessary. I saw tourists crowding sunbathing seals for photos and harassing the pups. I also saw people gracefully avoid restricted land to allow plants which had been trampled to regrow. I used a rope to climb down a cliff and stare at the caves from up close.
This sand- and limestone ground holds under my feet, but erosion is still the second thing on everyone’s minds. The first is how beautiful this land is, and how lucky we are to experience it.
