I love Utah. The red desert reminds me of the Australian Outback, another place that feels a little bit like home, and the rock formations that dot the desert never fail to take my breath away. I visit here--and the other “four corner” states--every couple of years, and found Utah is at its best in the spring. I could talk about Utah’s beauty for several posts, but today, I’m happy to share with you the Utah parks that make up my personal top five.
Zion National Park
This park is an oasis in the desert. With deep canyons, rivers you can walk through, and shimmering waterfalls, Utah’s first national park is not one to miss. The colors of the sandstone are absolutely gorgeous, contrasting with the lush plantlife, making it easy to see why this is one of Utah’s best (and busiest) parks.
Arches National Park
Arches is a place I’m just dying to explore more. It’s simply stunning, with gorgeous formations like frozen giants dotting the entire park, and the arches… the only word I have for them is breathtaking.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon is a place famous for its strange and beautiful hoodoos, or rocks which have been weathered over time into pinnacles. There’s nothing quite like walking deep down into a canyon only to feel like you’ve been transported into another world, so completely surrounded by these towering monoliths.
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
There’s nothing not to love about this beautiful place. With hoodoos and colorful plateaus and gorgeous rivers snaking throughout the land, it’s a hiker’s paradise.
If you go, see if you can catch a tour of Antelope Slot Canyon! Just a half-hour south of the Monument is a world-famous slot canyon still owned by the Navajo people, who graciously offer daily tours. It’s absolutely stunning, and although it can get quite crowded at times, you’ll have more than enough opportunities for photographs. Snow Canyon State Park
A small state park two hours west of Grand Staircase, Snow Canyon is chock-full of amazing things to see, from lava caves to a slot canyon. I hadn’t even known it existed until a ranger recommended it to me, but I’m so glad I decided to spend the day there, as it quickly became one of my new favorite parks in Utah.
BONUS: Monument Valley
Okay, full disclosure: I haven’t actually been here yet. But, before I lose all of my credibility, my dad and camping guide extraordinaire has spent a lot of time here, and he says it’s absolutely incredible. Even just judging by pictures I’ve seen which i stare at longingly every day, it’s not one to be missed.
