Waterfalls, rainforests, and, of course, the ocean are all part of what makes Cairns a must-see for any trip to Australia. While Cairns is of course best known for its access to the Great Barrier Reef, it’s also known as the gateway to Queensland's tropical north. With so many incredible things to see and do, Cairns is sure to surpass all your expectations, leaving you planning your next visit the second you leave. First and foremost, visit the Great Barrier Reef. This is the largest living organism in the world, and home to some of the most stunning creatures in the world. The vibrancy of the coral and other sea creatures that make this place their home will leave you in awe. You can reach the reef at large in under an hour from Cairns, but I suggest trying to visit one of the outer sections, where the water is clearer and the ecosystem less damaged by pollution. Also, do your research to ensure you visit with an ethical company, so you minimize the effects you have on this fragile environment. Nobody wants to travel all this way only to realize that the company you’re visiting with is harming this incredible place. For suggestions on how to do that, you can check out my guide to the Great Barrier Reef, or my article on a few of my favorite ethical wildlife encounters along Australia's eastern coast, which includes a segment on the reef! Next, visit the rainforests. Daintree Rainforest, two hours north of Cairns, is one that should make everybody’s bucket list, but I spent my time in Wooroonooran National Park. One hour south of Cairns, this lush rainforest is absolutely breathtaking. Be sure not to miss the waterfalls, too, because tropical northern Queensland is absolutely full of them. Josephine Falls (above left) was one of my favorites, but there are so many around here that they’re basically impossible to avoid--like cenotes in Quintana Roo, or Waffle Houses in the South. Finally, if all else fails, just take a walk. Get lost in this incredible part of the world. You won’t regret it. Like this post? Pin it!Hi, there! Enjoy this article?
