Why do I create art? This question has always struck me as funny. At the risk of sounding clichéd, it’s always felt like someone asking me why I breathe. I do it because I couldn’t possibly afford not to. It rounds out my life, it brings me a sense of calm, it gives me an outlet for self-expression when all other outlets are dwindled down to nothing. But maybe you’re not at that point yet. Maybe art seems like a fun hobby, or something you enjoy looking at but never really considered making yourself. There are countless articles on why art is good for you--like how looking at art increases empathy and making art improves brain connectivity, as well as reduces stress and symptoms of mental illness, and improves memory -- which I highly encourage you to check out. However, today I want to share with you why I think art is good for the spirit. 1. Art is a source of life. It represents everything good about the universe. Through art, we can know every emotion anyone has ever felt, and express our own.
2. Art doesn’t care if you’re good or bad, only people do. There are no qualifications for being an artist, except for one: you need to actually make art! It doesn’t matter if you or anybody else thinks your art is good or bad, because in that moment, what you made was what you needed to create. One of the best things about art is that nobody is born with talent, all it takes is practice. So, keep practicing--you can’t help but improve! 3. Art makes me feel better. Throughout all of my highs and lows, art is there for me, and creating art makes me feel better. I sometimes struggle with letting other people know how I feel, so on days when I don’t know how to explain, I can use art as an outlet to work out my emotions. The best way I could describe this is by borrowed words. I read The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater a few years ago, and I believe a quote from the final book, The Raven King, would answer this question nicely. Like me, the speaker suffers from insomnia, which he references to illustrate the depth of his feelings. Although the following is a quote about love, it could easily be used to describe my feelings about art. “Why do we breathe air? Because we love air? Because we don't want to suffocate. Why do we eat? Because we don't want to starve. How do I know I love her? Because I can sleep after I talk to her.” Why do I create art? Because I must. Why do I create art? Because I could live without it, but without it my life would be lesser. Why do I create art? Because I can sleep afterwards.
