I'm on a camping trip with my family this week (this post is scheduled; hi from the past!), and so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk about the intersection of art and travel. As someone who primarily paints landscapes, I draw a lot of inspiration from the natural world. Oftentimes I’ll end up painting from photographs that I took. As such, I place a lot of value in being able to travel and experience these places I’m trying to paint.
Every summer, my family and I go on a camping trip somewhere in the United States, and every few years, we’ll fly to some new, amazing place in the world. My love of hills and mountains came from my home in California; my love of the desert stems from hiking in Utah and the Australian Outback; my love of stone circles is born of Avebury. The natural world is important to me, as is its conservation. Part of the reason why I paint landscapes is because I hope that by sharing these places and their beauty with the world, I can help encourage people to save them. I recognize how incredibly lucky I am to visit all of these places--that I am able to breathe them in and feel their energy to translate into art. I’m so thankful for the opportunities I have to travel for my art, and I hope that I never lose sight of how lucky I am, nor forget to use my talents and opportunities to preserve and highlight these places.
