Letters from the West is a powerful collection of love letters and photographs taken in the western United States. Part poetry, part prose, it is a memoir that explores themes of love and loss, queer identity, religion and sacrifice.
Minimally edited from their original form, the letters contained in this book detail a long-distance relationship with moving honesty and almost voyeuristic intimacy, taking readers on a journey from the deepest pits of despair to the heights of adoration.
Each accompanying photograph was taken either through the window of a moving car or by the side of the road during a brief stop on the author’s journey around the west, in order to capture the essence of a transient feeling or moment. They evoke a new sense of wonder for the most mundane of sceneries, and inspire wanderlust as the reader is invited along on this journey.
Centered in liminality - the transition period during a right of passage - Letters from the West sends the resounding message that love is at the center of everything.
